St Andrew's, building for the new millenium
• access for all
• a versatile building
• a growing church
We have a vision as a church to transform the current interior of the church building to make it suitable for everyone and for all occasions.
Rather than seven different floor levels, with the space divided up to suit Victorian church fashion, we have plans for a fully versatile building (as it would have been in the Middle Ages) capable of meeting the needs of every member of our community.
A single floor level
The simple, yet radical, strategy is to remove the current floor and install a new yorkstone floor at a single level.
This will transform the accessibility of the building as well as revealing its beauty and making our care of this building something to be really proud of.
It will allow larger congregations - at weddings and funerals as well as on a Sunday to be seated comfortably in one single space.
Other improvements:
• Radiators replaced by underfloor heating
• A permanent sound system to include a loop for the hard of hearing
• Improved lighting with some clear glass in the chancel and new halogen uplights
• A new foyer to the hall
• Improvements to churchyard paths
• Kitchen facilities and a disabled loo for the church separate to the hall facilities
• New furniture throughout the church
• The tower (west) door will be opened up, allowing wedding processions along the length of the church A new electronic
Access for all
God welcomes all people, regardless of physical ability. Sometimes the church has lagged behind in doing what we can to communicate that through our buildings. In October 2004 the Disability Discrimination Act came into force, which compels public buildings to make their buildings accessible.
We believe that this project will make Marks Tey church one of the most outstanding examples of compliance with the act. The project will provide:
• level access
• disabled toilet
• a loop system improved lighting
How to help...
We've already sent you details of a number of fundraising events which the church is putting on in the coming months.
The total cost of this project will be in the region of £160,000. We've already passed the £50,000 mark in our fundraising, mostly gifts of all sizes from the regular church congregation.
If you'd like to give to the future of the church building in Marks Tey, please send your gift to the Treasurer (Lynne Baker), 2 Proctor Way, Marks Tey, CO6 1XE. (Cheques payable to 'St Andrew's PCC')
