Transcript

"The Spinning Wheel Tea House"

Built approx. 1935-6 beside Domsey Brook on the north side of the A12, mainly timber frame with thatched roof. It was destroyed by fire in Sept 1944. The Melrose brothers of Scotties Farm, Easthorpe were carting and stacking wheat sheaves at the time in a field beside the Easthorpe Road. On seeing the smoke they went to give any possible help.

It was a scorching hot day and everything(?) being very dry the building was quickly engulfed by the flames.

A number of American Flying Fortress bombers returning from a raid over on the continent were passing overhead. One plane came down low and circled the area a couple of times, (possibly thinking it was a crashed aircraft).

It was thought at the time that the fire was caused by the sun's rays on a glass bottle igniting tinder dry grass nearby and spreading to the building.

The debris was eventually cleared from the site about two years [later].
